V. Putting the plan into practice
This plan is intentionally broad, recommending a series of initiatives that, if implemented effectively, will build on the existing strengths and assets of the Village Temple, fill in gaps, and capitalize on opportunity so that we can grow our synagogue, engage members more actively and build a strong and sustainable institution that can fulfill our mission for generations to come.
This plan now belongs to the board and leadership that took office on May 1, 2013 and those who will follow during the three-year span of this plan. It will be their task to decide on the details and set priorities for the year ahead. We encourage them to assign leaders – whether officers, committees or others – who will “own” each initiative. We further recommend that the following elements be defined, in writing, for each initiative:
·
- Initiative leader and team: Who is responsible and involved in the work?
- Deliverables: What will be the results of the initiative? How will “success” be measured?
- Key activities: What action steps need to be undertaken to achieve the deliverable?
- Resource requirements: What investments (people, equipment, time, finances) will be needed to carry out the initiative?
- Interdependencies: How will the initiative affect other functions or areas of the organization? How will it affect other initiatives?
- Milestones: What are the major events, accomplishments, or key decision points that are anticipated? How will you know if and when your initiative is on or off track?
- Performance metrics: What will you measure to gauge progress on your initiative? How will you utilize these performance metrics to tell if your initiative is on or off trackl?
- Timeline: When will the initiative begin and end? At what milestone will you judge if your initial timeline is correct?
By itself, a plan is simply words on paper. What brings them to life will be the reflections by and conversations among clergy, staff, lay leaders and members. As they go about fulfilling their respective roles at the Village Temple, we hope they will keep this plan in front of them as a roadmap and framework for the present and future.
